I'll never forget the thrill of landing JDCO's first five-figure contract. After years as an employed graphic designer, I took the leap and officially launched Jennis Design Co. as an incorporated business. To be honest, I wasn't entirely sure what running a business truly meant, or what my next move should be. But I was all-in.

Our Big Break

Not long after, a friend presented an incredible opportunity: an organization was looking to re-brand, and they were accepting proposals. I was completely new to the formal RFP (Request for Proposal) process, but I leaned into every bit of experience I had from my non-profit and freelance design work to draft what I hoped was a compelling proposal. My friend graciously reviewed it and provided invaluable feedback on how to pitch our creative services in a way that spoke directly to the organization's needs.

What I didn't realize at the time was that my small, solo design company was competing against some seriously excellent, top-notch agencies – all of whom would have done a fantastic job. Being chosen for the project was a mix of excitement, humility, and a healthy dose of nerves. Thankfully, the project went smoothly, and we celebrated its success with the client.

That organization took a chance on a brand-new company, and I'll forever be grateful for that leap of faith. Since then, JDCO has grown, our team has strategically evolved, and our processes have become much more established. Like this organization, you may be searching for the right creative partner for your organization. Here are nine considerations to take into account.

Agency vs. Up-and-Comer: Which Creative Partner is Right for Your Business?

There's undeniable value in hiring an experienced creative team, and equally, there can be immense value in partnering with an up-and-coming designer or creative team. But how do you know which is the right fit for your business and creative goals? When is it truly worth hiring a seasoned agency versus bringing on an in-house designer or a newer, agile team?

Let's break down the advantages a well-established creative partner brings to the table:

  1. Benefit from Years of Experience

An experienced team has seen it all. They've navigated the complexities of various industries, understanding everything from regulations to emerging trends. This means they've likely worked on similar projects, learning valuable lessons from both their triumphs and challenges. Their experience is also a huge asset in crisis management, helping you navigate unexpected issues or changes with a steady hand.

  2. Creativity Comes Quickly

With a practiced team, brainstorming efficiency is a given. They can generate a wide range of ideas quickly and then swiftly move into concept refinement, identifying the most promising concepts and honing them to perfection. Their adaptability also means they're skilled at quickly adjusting to new briefs or changes in direction, saving you time and resources.

  3. The Process is Established, Not Figured Out as They Go

One of the biggest advantages of an experienced team is their proven process for project management. They have established workflows for everything from timelines to deliverables. They excel at communication, keeping you informed every step of the way and promptly addressing concerns. This experience also translates to effective risk mitigation, as they can anticipate potential challenges and develop contingency plans before they become issues.

  4. Knowledge of Systems

Seasoned creative professionals are proficient in the latest design tools, marketing platforms, and other relevant technologies. Their deep workflow optimization skills mean they can streamline processes and improve overall efficiency. This knowledge can also lead to cost-effectiveness, as they can identify smart solutions that save you money in the long run.

  5. Strategic Thinking for the Best Results

An established team will help you define clear objectives and measure success, ensuring your creative efforts are aligned with your business goals. They have a deep understanding of your target audience and their needs, allowing them to craft truly impactful campaigns. Beyond the immediate project, they can help you develop a long-term creative strategy that aligns with your overarching vision.

  6. Network and Connections

Experienced agencies often have extensive industry relationships with other professionals, such as influencers or media outlets. They can also recommend reliable vendor partnerships for services like printing or photography. This network can provide access to exclusive opportunities or information that you might not otherwise find.

  7. They Know the Right Questions to Ask

An experienced creative team will ask insightful inquiries that uncover your unique needs and goals. They're adept at problem identification, often spotting potential challenges or roadblocks before they become major issues. This allows them to develop tailored solutions that precisely address your specific challenges.

  8. Take the Guesswork Out of the Process

With an established team, you'll benefit from clear guidance and direction throughout the project. They can help you make informed decisions based on their expertise and take ownership of the project, ensuring it stays on track and delivers on its promises.

  9. A Good Team Offers a Solid Multi-disciplinary Approach

You're not just getting a designer; you're getting a team with diverse skill sets, from design to copywriting to marketing. They work together seamlessly, fostering collaboration to create cohesive and effective campaigns. This means they can offer comprehensive solutions that address all aspects of your creative needs.

Deciding on the right creative partner is a significant choice for any business. While an experienced agency offers a wealth of benefits that can lead to predictable, high-quality results, sometimes, taking a chance on an up-and-coming team can yield incredible breakthroughs and a fresh perspective.
